[Choreographies of the Everyday]November 11–16 | Retelling Spices, Sensing Spaces — A Zine-Making Series with Bakudapan Food Study Group

News

In Spaces in Spices, Bakudapan Food Study Group explores the notion of “ethnic cuisine” to question what “ethnic” means, how this category operates in society, and how it is often attached to specific communities and cultures.
For the group, creating zines (self-published booklets) has been a vital way to share knowledge and experiences gained through research, generating dialogue beyond the exhibition space. The process of making a zine is itself a practice of editing multiple voices and rethinking the world through shifting perspectives.
In this program, the group will share their unique approach to zine-making and invite participants to collectively create a zine. Through listening, recording, editing, and shaping each other’s experiences—or retelling one’s own stories—participants will explore new ways of encountering others. This approach reflects a central idea behind Bakudapan’s ongoing research on food and social relations.
The zine will be collaboratively woven by people who engage in different phases of the workshops, maintaining multiple perspectives of “others.” The completed zine will be presented on the final day, accompanied by a talk by the artists.

The workshops take place over six days. Each session is designed as an independent workshop. Participants can join just one day or multiple sessions.

 Working with Stickiness

In this workshop, participants will engage with stickers placed on a map that record visitors’ comments related to “home,” “food,” and “migration.” Together, we will read, observe, and discuss these collected episodes to uncover sensations that “stick” to our eyes, noses, skin, and mind—those feelings that linger and stay with us.”

Program:
Introduction / Reading visitors’ stories / Sharing session / Note-taking and documentation / Reflection

Dates & Time:
November 11 (Tue)12 (Wed) 13:00–16:00
10 participants per day.

Photos of the Around and the Other

In Spaces in Spices, taking photographs was an important way for Bakudapan to document their research. For the group, photographing places, buildings, people, and food became a means to recall the atmosphere and memories of each field site.
In this session, participants are invited to bring photographs from their own daily lives and, through printing, scanning, and editing, retell their personal experiences by compiling them into a zine. Together, we will reflect on how images can convey the textures of everyday life and the traces of encounters with others.

Program:
Introduction / Printing and scanning participants’ photos / Editing and composing for zine / Sharing and reflection

Dates & Time:
November 13 (Thu) 13:00–16:00
10 participants per day.

 Browsing Through the Spacing

During their research trip around the Tokyo metropolitan area, Bakudapan visited various local communities and recorded their encounters and conversations in short field notes.
These notes, displayed in the exhibition space, preserve the voices of local residents and traces of dialogue between the artists and the people they met.
In this session, participants will read and reflect on these field notes, exchanging stories by comparing them with their own lives and experiences.
At the end, participants will annotate the stories they share, adding comments, reflections, or drawings to offer new perspectives on the narratives that emerge.

Program:
Introduction / Reading field notes / Group interviews and story exchange (reflecting on connections between the notes and one’s own experience) / Making annotation

Dates & Time:
November 14(Fri)15(Sat) 13:00–16:00
10 participants per day.

Familiarizing the Otherness

On the final day, participants will revisit and engage with all the materials collected throughout the previous sessions.
Using paper, tape, scissors, and other tools, we will experiment with different ways of combining and composing these fragments into a single zine.
This session will also include a presentation by Bakudapan Food Study Group about their project Spaces in Spices and a reflection on the overall workshop process.

Program:
Introduction / Artist presentation and reflection on the previous sessions / Zine-making / Closing

Dates & Time:
November 16(Sun) 13:00–16:00
No advance registration required.
Capacity: 30 people
