[Nov. 22] "Choreographies of the Everyday" Mini Concert by Marunouchi Choir

News

Recital by Marunouchi Choir

For the closing event of MOT’s 30th Anniversary Exhibition "Choreographies of the Everyday," a mini concert will be held featuring the Marunouchi Choir whose members contributed to the creation of the work Listening Air by Shilpa Gupta.

Listening Air (2019–2025) is a sound installation that gathers songs of protest from across the world. Eight suspended microphones-turned-speakers and dimly lit lightbulbs sway gently in a darkened space, where echoes of voices of unseen people are layered like constellations. For the first showing of this work in Japan, Gupta added the Japanese anti-war song "All That the Man Left Behind When He Died" (music by Takemitsu Toru, lyrics by Tanikawa Shuntaro) using the recorded singing voices of Marunouchi Choir members.

The
Marunouchi Choir is a mixed-voice adult choir celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Through performances at domestic music festivals such as La Folle Journée and regular concerts, the group has built a diverse repertoire spanning classical to contemporary music.

For this closing event, volunteer members of the choir will gather to sing "All That the Man Left Behind When He Died," along with selected songs inspired by Listening Air. The harmony woven by voices of live singing will bring forth new echoes within the public space of the museum.
