MOT annual 2003 Days

Since the first "MOT Annual" in 1999, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo has presented a group exhibition every year to introduce the latest trends in Japanese art.

This year's exhibition, the "MOT Annual 2003 'days'" considers the rich meaning in the many recent artworks created by artists who quietly observe the events of everyday life and their own surroundings. This six artists, Noda Testuya, Oshie Chieko, Uehara Michiyo, Someya Arika, Takagi Masakatsu, and Kobayashi Takanobu, each deal with different subjects, but they have found a common approach to making art in the present age. At a time of dizzying change, when it is almost impossible to find definite standards, they have built a solid artistic world by watching themselves and their immediate environment, remaining true to their own sensibility, and following their own individual ways of thinking.

Their works, which seem uneventful at first glance, contain a variety of ideas and possible readings, showing the complexity of the present age. We hope that this exhibition will provide an opportunity to experience the abundance and beauty of their expression and reevaluate the possibilities of art.
