Shubigi Rao

Born 1975 in Mumbai, India, based in Singapore.
Shubigi Rao’s wide range of works—from films and photographs to drawings and books—have been produced as part of her long-term project Pulp, which started in 2014. Evolving from her research into the destruction of books, archives, and libraries across various regions, the project sheds light on those who devote themselves to the preservation of endangered knowledge and its reconstruction, with particular attention to the acts of resistance by women. Rao’s such practice reveals that the attempt to destroy knowledge, including history, culture, and language, is intertwined with colonialism, authoritarianism, and environmental destruction driven by exploitative capitalism.
