Heman Chong
Born 1977 in Muar, Malaysia, currently based in Singapore.
Heman Chong is an artist whose work unfolds at the intersection between image, performance, situations, and writing. Marked by acerbic wit, his works address contemporary geopolitics and the infrastructural ironies of our data-driven, globally networked society. Often involving rules and systems that invite participation by both viewers and presenting institutions, his practice invokes communication and performativity as ways of imagining, questioning, and, at times, intervening in infrastructure as an everyday form of politics.
Chong will present his new work, Departures (Part 1) (2025), which invites one participant each day, as well as a collaboration with Renée Staal, The Library of Unread Books (2016–), alongside the text work, This is a dynamic list and may never be able to satisfy particular standards for completeness (2016).
