Artist
Aoyama Satoru
Born 1973 in Tokyo, Japan, and currently based there.
Aoyama Satoru uses industrial sewing machines, symbols of the replacement of handcraft with machinery in the wake of the Industrial Revolution, to address themes such as the changing value of labor and art, as well as the social issues around gender, and, at times, race. Through intricate embroidery, he recovers what has been rendered invisible and forgotten in a society where the distortions of capitalism and globalization grow starker even as those trends accelerate.
