Born in Münchenbuchsee, Switzerland, 1879. He became well-versed in music as a result of his parent's influence and also received training in painting. From 1898 to 1901 he studied drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. He met Kandinsky in 1911 and became a member of The Blue Rider group. He was influenced by various contemporary art movements but never confined himself to any particular doctrine, changing his style frequently as a result of the experiences he underwent during his travels. He taught at Bauhaus from 1921 to 1931 and again in 1933 but his work was branded 'degenerate art' by the Nazis causing him to flee to Bern. He died in Muralto, Switzerland, in 1940.
