ジョン・ケージ｜John Cage 1912年ロサンゼルス生まれ。電子音響や楽器以外の物の音、行為、沈黙、不確定性といった要素を 取り入れた作曲で、それまでの音楽概念を覆した20世紀の実験音楽のパイオニア。1940年、グランドピアノの弦に異物を挟み多様な音を奏でる「プリペアド・ピアノ」を考案。1944年、ダンサーでケージの生涯のパートナーとなったマース・カニングハムとの共作が始まり、以後数々の傑作を生みだした。東洋思想に傾倒し、《易の音楽》（1951年）、《4分33秒》（1952年）等の作曲を通じて、「偶然性の音楽」を確立した。楽曲の他にドローイングや版画、彫刻なども制作した。 Born in Los Angeles in 1912. He was a pioneer of twentieth century experimental music, employing noises made by things other than musical instruments and electronic sounds, actions, silence or indeterminacy in his compositions in an effort to overturn the accepted concept of music. In 1940 he invented the ‘prepared piano’, placing objects under the strings of a grand piano to create a variety of sounds. In 1944 he began to work with the dancer, Merce Philip Cunningham, who was his lifelong partner, going on to write numerous masterpieces with her. He was interested in Eastern philosophy, leading him to produce works such as Music of Changes (1951) or 4’33” (1952) and establish aleatoric or ‘chance-controlled’ music. In addition to music, he also produced drawings, etchings and sculpture.
