MOT Collection

COLLECTION ONGOING

Each term, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT) selects about 100 artworks from its some 4,800-piece collection for display in its permanent exhibition--the "MOT Collection." In this way, MOT seeks to offer a wide range of perspectives on postwar and contemporary art. This term, "Collection Ongoing" places a particular focus on Pop Art and works on paper in conjunction with special exhibits of newly acquired works.

MOT has actively collected works of Pop Art ever since its opening, seeing it as one source from which contemporary art flows. Key works in the collection include pieces by Andy Warhol and David Hockney. This time, the fruits of MOT's acquisition efforts in the Pop genre are presented in the form of an "encore." Works employing paper as a medium, meanwhile, account for the majority of the pieces in the collection. Because they require special care to preserve, however, opportunities for exhibiting them are limited. This term, viewers can enjoy immersing themselves in a colorful array of "works on paper." In conjunction, we are also presenting special exhibits highlighting the museum's newly acquired works by TATSUNO Toeko (1950-2014) and TOYOSHIMA Yasuko (1967-). "Collection Ongoing" provides a fascinating look at MOT's evolving collection attuned to the art of our contemporary world. When the exhibition ends, MOT will temporarily close for a long-term renovation project. We invite you to take this opportunity to savor our collection one time before we close.
