Hussein Chalayan- from fashion and back
A creator continually crossing the border between fashion and art, Hussein Chalayan (1970- Cyprus). Through collections imbued with pungent social criticism and through technology inspired clothing designs fitted with LEDs and laser beams, he has become known as one of today’s most powerfully innovative and experimental designers. This exhibition, an international traveling exhibition of large scale originally held at the Design Museum, London, will display not only Chalayan’s fashion creations but his many-faceted creative activities, through some 24 pieces including film works and installations.

Tokyo Art Meeting Transformation
People have always been fascinated by images of transformation involving the human body. What does it mean for human beings to transform themselves into “something other than human”? Transformations into animals, imaginary creatures, robots, and cyborgs . . . Transformations by means of plastic surgery, gene manipulation, and organ transplants . . . Along with ecology, a return to the primitive, and research into new human characteristics for future survival, this has recently become a hot topic in contemporary art. Produced in collaboration with anthropologist Shinichi Nakazawa, this exhibition will bring a new perspective to contemporary art, with “art expansions” as its keyword. As a cross-disciplinary endeavor, it will traverse fields to present historical artworks, subculture, and archive materials together with contemporary art.

Kyoji Takubo
The first comprehensive solo exhibition in Tokyo devoted to Kyoji Takubo (1949—), an artist known for his Chapel of Apple restoration project. After initially working in such genres as performance art and objet d’art, Takubo from 1987 devoted more than ten years to the restoration of a small chapel in Normandy. Today, he is engaged in a long-term restoration project at Kotohira-gu Shrine in Shikoku that shows the varied character of contemporary artistic endeavor. His career has unfolded within a struggle between a movement outward from the site, involving relocation and border transgression, and creation that respects the scenery within the site and gives play to the structure of the existing culture there.Feb. 26, 2011(Sat) – May. 8(Sun)

MOT Annual 2011: A Buttefly’s Beating Wings (tentative title)
Each year since 1999, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo has held a MOT Annual exhibition to showcase new trends in art, with a focus on the Tokyo metropolis. This time, the 11th MOT Annual will look at artists who are carving out their own aesthetic worlds by selecting simple everyday methods, materials, and themes and working at them continuously. Their explorations of the world at their feet may appearsenstive, small, and closed, yet they in fact possess great flexibility, depth, and breadth of vision. Taking “Nearest Faraway / a nearby distant world” as its keyword, the exhibition will inquire into the potential of art and the meaning of creating art in our times.Feb. 26, 2011(Sat) – May. 8(Sun)
