アーティスト・ステイトメント

統計のシステム、言語のシステム、情報のシステムなど、すべてのシステムは私を従わせ、同時に拒絶します。これが、私の作品制作をおこなう動機づけになっています。それらの美しい秩序と対称性は、それらの主題について明白で必然のような真実を完璧なまでに示しているようにみえます。形式と中身の作為的な関係性にもとづき、私はそれらを解体させ、捩じらせ、そもそもの表示と仮説に用いられた形式を問うような方法で再解釈と再提示をおこなうのです。そして、時間もまた統計です。ゆっくりとした時の深みといつの間にか歳をとってしまう儚い感覚とが調和しないまま、時計の規則正しい時間に刻まれているのです。
私が試みようとしているのは、代替的な方法によっていかにシステムとその情報内容を変えていくことができるか、というものです。これまでは、アメリカ合衆国統計局が出している「CIA Factbook」や、国内外の新聞紙面などから着想を得ています。代理＝表象のシステムは、どこにでも見出せるのです。
明るく鮮明な色のペインティングや、刺繍、デジタル印刷、インスタレーション、映像や彫刻的なオブジェといった過去の作品におけるメディアは、そのシステムに対して効果的な働きかけと改変が可能なものを選び取っています。作品の視覚的な魅力は、背後にある情報が持つ強度を裏切ります。それが鍵となって、熱心に眺める人たちに対してシステムとデータが白日のものとに暴かれることになるのです。
こういった解釈と表示形式への強い関心は、鑑賞者と美術作品、見ることと読むこと、建築空間の内側、あるいはそこから出ていく作品といった、入り組んだ関係性の概念的な伝統の延長にあると思います。つまり、鑑賞者はシステムにおいては逃れがたい主体として、つねに作品に介在しているわけです。

《いくつかの生地がつくる国旗》（Some Material Flags）プロジェクトとは

国旗は、その国の思想や歴史、政治構造などを典型的に提示するものです。このプロジェクトの考えの背後にあるのは、どのようにすれば実際に住んでいる人たちについての情報をもとにして国旗をデザインすることができるか、というものです。
星や円、ストライプ、三日月、ダイヤ型などの形が、コーヒーの消費、携帯電話の利用、アルコールや砂糖の消費、文盲率などが、全体の人口に対する比率によって示されます。つまり、理想的に象徴化された国旗を、ありふれた日常の範疇に置き換えるのが目的です。旗の素材は、薄手の織物で生地によって襞ができるので、肌に密着する平らな表面ではなく汗が滲まないようになっていて、一般的にはストライプやチェックの模様があります。

Artist statement

Statistical systems, linguistic systems, information systems, all systems compel and repulse me. This is the driving force of my practice. Their delightful order and symmetry appear perfectly composed to present an undeniable and inevitable truth about their subject. Their artificial relationship between form and content compels me to pull them apart, twist them around, recode them and re-present them in ways that question their original form of representation and their assumptions. And time is a statistic – where the depth of slow seconds and the fleetingness of years sit incongruously with the regular count of a clock.
My practice asks how alternative presentations can change the meaning of both the system and the information it holds To date I have drawn inspiration from the CIA’s Factbook, the United Nations Statistics Division, the pages of local and international newspapers, and other sources. Systems of representation are everywhere.
Bright and sharply coloured paintings, needlepoints, digital prints, installations, videos, and sculptural objects form my extensive portfolio. Each medium is chosen for its qualities that most effectively challenge and redress the system it illustrates. The work’s visual appeal belies the intensity of the information behind it.
Keys and codes sometimes reveal the system and its data to the dedicated viewer. This concentration on interpreting and presenting systems continues conceptual traditions of complicating the relationship between the viewer and the work of art, between looking and reading, and between the experience of the work within and against architecture. As an inevitable subject of systems the viewer is forever present in the work.

About the artwork-Some Material Flags

The national flag typically represents the ideals, history, political structure, and so on, of a country. The concept behind this project is to consider how a national flag might be designed to represent commonplace information about its inhabitants.
Stars, circles, stripes, crescents, diamonds and other shapes will each illustrate – in proportion to the entire population as to the entire flag – such ordinary information as coffee consumption, cell phone usage, alcohol consumption, sugar consumption, literacy levels, and so on.　The idea is to relocate the idealistic symbology of flags into the realm of the ordinary.
To this end, the flags will be made of seersucker – a fabric whose texture is striped with puckers and designed for the practical effect of wicking sweat off a person's body with much greater ease than a typical flat fabric. Its pattern is generally striped or checked.
